What’s New in the 2021 Jeep Wrangler?

For 2021, Jeep now offers a new plug-in hybrid option to power the Wrangler. This efficient powertrain puts out 375 horsepower with a combination of a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and electric motor. The hybrid is available in the spacious Unlimited four-door body style, and the battery pack is situated under the rear seats to maintain the vehicle’s high ground clearance. A 285-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 comes standard, and Jeep also offers a muscular diesel as well. You can expect exhilarating agility in any version you choose, and the Wrangler can also be equipped with off-roading tools like skid plates, locking differentials, and more. The base model can be equipped with a two-speed transfer case, and the Rubicon trim can be upgraded with Rock-Track four-wheel drive. When the 2021 model is optimized for towing, it can pull up to 3,500 pounds.

Jeep has also introduced new trims for 2021, starting with the 80th Anniversary Edition. This version sports commemorative badging and other features to set itself apart and commemorate eight decades since the arrival of the original Willys MB. The Islander trim returns to the Wrangler lineup with rock rails, an optional white hard top, and tiki styling.

The Wrangler’s cab is fitted with durable materials to let you brave the outdoors without worry. This hearty interior features water-resistant surfaces and drain plugs in the floor to facilitate easy cleanup when you rumble through the wild with the doors off or top removed. The base model comes with two doors, and the roomy Unlimited body style comes with four doors and seating for up to five people. In any version, your whole crew will enjoy plenty of legroom and overhead space.

Several touchscreen sizes are available for easy access to the Wrangler’s infotainment system. Jeep offers convenient tech options like onboard Wi-Fi, navigation, and smartphone integration, while available safety tools include blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. A rearview camera comes standard.

History of the Jeep Wrangler

Even though Jeep didn’t introduce the Wrangler nameplate until the 1980s, the roots of this rugged SUV can be traced all the way back to World War II. The Willys MB served as reliable personnel transport when U.S. forces needed to maneuver across treacherous landscapes, and it proved itself to be unwaveringly reliable during its trial by fire. When the vehicle arrived on American roadways following the war, it was well received by civilian drivers. Four decades before the Wrangler arrived, the Jeep CJ came with a hearty design and style mainstays like the seven-slotted grille. The vehicle also retained the original model’s removable doors, a unique feature that remains a Wrangler signature.

In the years that followed, Chrysler purchased Jeep, and the Wrangler was updated to offer a host of new features. The Wrangler TJ arrived in 1997 sporting a stiffer frame and taller profile, and the Rubicon debuted six years later to satisfy dedicated Willys fans. This off-roading champ made itself at home on rough and challenging trails. The JK arrived in 2007 to blend the Wrangler’s off-roading ability with contemporary conveniences and tech.
